Anne Macomson Rivers, age 97, died on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. A native of Spartanburg, SC, she was born on March 14, 1914, the youngest daughter and one of eight children of Michael Rhett Macomson and Nancy Wright Macomson. She attended the public schools in Spartanburg and in New York City and was a student at Converse College before graduating from Lander College, and received her Masters Degree from Coker College. Mrs. Rivers began her teaching career in McBee, SC, and later taught civics and Spanish for many years at Chesterfield High School, where she was an especially popular teacher known to her students as "Miss Anne".
In the early 1940's she was married to Stephen Graydon Rivers, a native of Mt. Croghan, SC and following World War II, the couple settled with their young daughter in Chesterfield, where she lived for the rest of her life in the Ivy Hill neighborhood. Mrs. Rivers was active in the civic and social life of Chesterfield, especially as a member of several of the many bridge clubs there. She last played bridge just a few days before her unexpected death.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Rivers was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and one of the three oldest citizens of the town. "Miss Anne" will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, and her great sense of humor. She always enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rivers was also preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Graydon Rivers, 4 brothers, Edwin O., Michael Rhett, Sr., W. Wright, and Perry T. Macomson; and by 2 sisters, Margaret Macomson, and Mary Ellerbe.
Mrs. Rivers immediate survivor is her daughter, Anne Walton Rivers, of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews on both the Rivers and Macomson sides of her family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel in Chesterfield, SC. Interment will follow in the Chesterfield Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, 318 E. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC.
