Annie Sue Gulledge Hurst
Morven, NC

Mrs. Hurst, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, March 15, 2014 after a courageous battle with a series of illnesses. She was born on September 21, 1924, the youngest daughter of Annie Lee Ratliff and James Arthur Gulledge. She was a loving and much loved and adored wife, mother, and grandmother. She was affectionately known as "Meme" by her grandchildren, and she never missed the opportunity to say to her family and friends "Love You Guys".

Mrs. Hurst graduated from Chesterfield High School, North Greenville Junior College (now North Greenville University), and Winthrop College (now Winthrop University). In addition, she completed post-graduate studies at Coker College and Winthrop. She was a second-grade teacher for 31 years, the majority of her tenure spent in the Rock Hill School District #3 system. She served on the South Carolina Language Arts Curriculum Committee and was a former "Teacher of the Year". She loved reading and always had a book close at hand, a love that she enthusiastically passed on to her many students, her children, and her grandchildren. Additionally, she avidly followed ACC basketball and was always cheering on her favorite Duke Blue Devils.

Mrs. Hurst was a devoted Christian with a strong and abiding faith. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, SC and derived great joy as a member of the Wesley Fellowship Class and the "Lunch Bunch".

Mrs. Hurst was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-one years, Alvin Dewain Hurst, Sr.; her brothers, James Arthur Gulledge, Jr., William Preston Gulledge, Joe Ratliff Gulledge; and her sisters, Evelyn Gulledge Steele and Frances Gulledge Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Susanne Hurst McGuire, and husband William Bulgin McGuire, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; son, Alvin Dewain Hurst, Jr., and wife Anna Young Hurst of Morven, NC; grandchildren, Caroline Robinson McGuire of Charlotte, NC; William Hurst McGuire of Washington, District of Columbia; Molly Lauer McGuire of Charlotte, NC; two special cousins, John Preston Ratliff and Sarah Ratliff Faulkner, and numerous nieces and nephews.
