Mrs. Bernice Crowley Gainey, age 84, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery by Brent Taylor. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
Due to the continued COVID-19 restrictions, we ask that you practice social distancing at all times. The family would like for all attending the service to please wear a face covering.
Mrs. Gainey was born March 11, 1936 in Darlington County, SC a daughter of the late Kermin and Alta Mae Peavy Crowley. She was a retired cloth inspector for Springs Industries with over 35 years of service. Bernice enjoyed sewing and making clothes for other people as well as her family. She also enjoyed going on day trips and riding through the countryside. Mrs. Gainey was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church and loved being a part of her Sunday school class. She referred to those ladies as her family. A very talented cook, Bernice also enjoyed baking cakes and pies, and was known for her 10-layer chocolate cake.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gainey was also preceded in death by her older brother, Kermin Boyd “Buddy” (Marlene) Crowley; sister, Violet (Lee) Hunsucker; younger brother, K.D. Crowley; brothers-in-law, John Musselwhite, William Steen, James Thomas “J.T.” Gainey, and Charles W. Gainey; sisters-in-law, Edna Belk, Verdie (Bert) Faile, Edel Gainey, Margaret Chandler, Elma “Peggy” Plyler, Marcine Gainey, and Betty Gainey; mother-in-law, Mattie Gainey Jordan Gulledge; and numerous other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Gulledge & Jordan families.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Joseph E. Gainey; daughter, Kathy Gainey both of the home; sisters, Frances Musselwhite, and Katherine Steen both of Hartsville, SC; and brother-in-law, Wylie (Bonnie) Gainey of Jefferson, SC.
