Mrs. Betty Sue Hinson Watford, age 82, entered into rest on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at her home with her family by her side. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Patrick Baptist Church by Pastor Grover Johnson, Dr. Wayne Williams, and Doug Compton with the eulogy being delivered by Shari Carter, NP. The burial will follow in the Patrick Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Saturday, prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Watford was born May 11, 1941 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Danel and Hannah Privette Hinson. She was a graduate of Zoar High School and a faithful member of Patrick Baptist Church where she served in numerous capacities throughout the years. She embarked on her first job at J. Calvin Rivers Farm as a house cooker and cotton picker. Over the course of her life, she also worked as a roller-skating instructor at Gaskins Skating Rink and as a waitress at Patrick Fish House. Later on, she drove for EOC and PDRTA before becoming the proud owner of the first Radio Shack in Cheraw, SC in 1974. Mrs. Watford retired from Chesterfield County School District after serving many years as a Teacher's Aide.
Mrs. Watford loved her hometown of Patrick and was very involved in her community. For over two decades, she was an active member of the Patrick Pinestraw Festival Committee, where she served as the chairman of both the Patrick Christman Parade and the Patrick Pinestraw Festival Parade. She also volunteered her time each summer as Camp Director for Woodmen of The World.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Watford was also preceded in death by 2 children, Caleb Watford, and Denna Watford; and was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been predeceased by her siblings, Hazel Hinson, Margie H. Caulder, Ruth H. Alexander, Leona H. Boatwright, Dean H. McBride, Wendel Hinson, Brodus Hinson, Charles Hinson, Walter Hinson, and Reece Hinson. Furthermore, Mrs. Watford mourned the loss of her mentor and close friend Glenda Claytor, whose influence on her life was immeasurable.
A small keepsake urn will be placed in Mrs. Watford's hand to symbolize her eternal friendship with Mrs. Claytor.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, James Edward “Jimmy” Watford of the home; daughter, Jena (Jimmy) Crowder of Patrick, SC; son, Chris (Susan) Watford of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Hannah (Shawn) Gopaul of Pageland, SC, Keith Crowder of Patrick SC, Garret Watford, and Ruby Watford both of Florida; great grandchildren, Oakley Gopaul of Pageland, SC, and Naiyah Watford of Florida; sisters-in-law, Gail Hinson of Charlotte, NC, Wanda Griggs, and Barbara Watford both of Hartsville, SC; brother-in-law, Wayne “Snake” Watford of Hartsville, SC; 74 nieces and nephews.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the nursing staff at CenterWell Home Health as well as Dr. Travis Novinger and staff of Palmetto Family Medicine and Shari Carter NP for their exceptional care and love extended to Mrs. Watford over the years.
Flowers are welcomed in memory of Mrs. Watford. However, for those who wish to make a lasting tribute in her honor, memorial donations can be made to Crescent Hospice of Hartsville, 696 Medical Park Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550.
