Billy John Roscoe, 76, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.  He was born on December 23, 1947, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, and was the son of Gurley Roscoe and Geneva Rivers Roscoe.

Billy served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam.  He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.  Exposing himself to incoming rounds, he continued to supervise accurate counterfire until the enemy was forced to withdraw.  Sergeant Roscoe’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest tradition of military service.

Billy retired from the US Post Office after many years of service.  He was a member of Woodmen of the World.  He loved gardening and being outdoors and traveling to the beach and to the mountains.  Billy enjoyed spending time with his Vietnam buddies.  He attended Dutch Fork Baptist Church. Billy was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he loved gathering with family and telling stories.

Billy is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sara Frances Teal Roscoe; and his sons, Paul B. Roscoe (Emma); Mark D. Roscoe (Lindsay); and John L. Roscoe (Bernadeth). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kyle, Courtney, Taylor, Billy, Cole, Medlin, Yzhaian, Reagan and Logan; his great-grandchild, Charlie Grace; and his two sisters, Aronica (Bennie) Teal, and Patricia Gainey both of Chesterfield, SC.

Billy was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Hugh Roscoe, J.L. Roscoe, and Reece Roscoe; and two sisters, Mavis Beyersdorf, and Della Mae Hartwick.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Dutch Fork Baptist Church Cemetery (3517 Dreher Shoals Road, Irmo, SC 29063).  The Reverend Paul Allen will officiate.  The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home.
