Carol Outen Johnson

Mrs. Carol Outen Johnson, age 83, was born into eternal life on the morning of Friday, January 24, 2025, within the comfort of her home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Hopewell Baptist Church and will be officiated by The Honorable Rep. Pastor Richie Yow and Reverend Bill Lively, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church and at other times in her home.

Born on May 28, 1941 in Pageland, South Carolina, Carol was the beloved daughter of the late Clon W. and Estelle Sutton Outen. A graduate of Ruby High School, Mrs. Carol served as a secretary for over 28 years with J. Calvin Rivers Farm and later, as a co-owner and operator of Chesterfield Hardware. Mrs. Carol also served her community as the treasurer of the Greater Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce for over 15 years. In her retirement, she brought her true passion to life on Main Street in Chesterfield as the owner of Savannah’s, a women’s clothing boutique, where she enjoyed sharing her love for fashion with all who rang the bell above the front door. A true Southern Belle and as Chesterfield’s best dressed lady, Mrs. Carol, known for her elegant style, knew that true confidence lies in the right outfit and a good pair of high-heeled shoes. 

Most importantly, Mrs. Carol knew the overwhelming love of Jesus. She faithfully served the Lord at Hopewell Baptist Church where she was an active member of the WMU and nurtured young women in their faith as an Acteen Leader. Mrs. Carol eventually opened her home and organized the Joy in the Morning Ladies Prayer Group to foster Christian friendship and spiritual growth. If you are reading this, Mrs. Carol would want you to know that with the love of Jesus, you can weather any storm, and He overcame the world so that you might find peace and love in Him. 

During her life, Mrs. Carol enjoyed shopping, traveling, keeping up with friends on Facebook, and she was known for her beautiful penmanship. She was a friend to all. She always had a warm hug or a bright smile to share. She greeted everyone with a kind word of encouragement. She left every conversation with an “I love you.” Mrs. Carol had a true heart for Jesus. She would pray for you daily. The world was a better, brighter place with her here. 

Mrs. Carol was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Mr. Charles Alton Johnson and her beloved sister, Mrs. Johnnie Outen Oliver. Carol and Johnnie shared the kind of bond between sisters that soothes the soul and lifts the spirit. We know their reunion in Heaven made the sparkle of the stars a little brighter. 

Mrs. Carol’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of her son, Charles Alton “Chuck” Johnson, Jr. (Leanne) of Chesterfield; her daughter, Casey Gaskins Moore (Mike) of Ruby; her grandchildren, Colt Deberry (Ashton Schleicher) of Chesterfield; Briana Hoff (Shawn) of Calabash, NC; Emily Gaskins (Jordan Murphy) of Ruby, SC; and Cayleigh Johnson of Chesterfield; her great grandson, Mason Hoff; her “adopted son”, Joel Lisenby of Ruby; her brother, Donald “Don Sutton Outen (Viola) of Ruby; along with numerous nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Donna Curtis of Chesterfield; and her friends of the heart, Jack, Betty, and Jay Rivers, all of Chesterfield. 

 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church, 15084 Highway 9, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
