Cecil Leverne Grooms, of Cheraw, South Carolina, was called to his heavenly home on April 13, 2023 at the age of 66. Mr. Grooms passed away with his wife and children at his side after days of precious time spent in the loving presence of his mother, siblings, and close loved ones. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many.
Mr. Grooms was born on March 22, 1957 at the Perry Clinic in Chesterfield, SC. He was the oldest child of Luther P. and Gladys Grooms. He grew up in the Teal's Mill area and graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1975. On November 4, 1978, Cecil married the love of his life, Kathy Sims of Ruby, SC. Married for nearly 44 and a half years at the time of his death, Cecil always told Kathy she was, "My girl, my whole world." During Kathy's own battle with cancer three years ago, Cecil provided unfailing care and never left her side throughout.
He was profoundly proud to be a father, and his children grew to be a nationally recognized teacher, an exceptionally gifted Nurse Practitioner, and his baby girl is a courageous Military Veteran and a brilliant Medical Laboratory Scientist. Cecil's "girls" were his proudest achievement, and he bragged on "Kristi Kat," "Danie Leigh," and "Whitney Beth" every possible chance that he could get. Mr. Grooms' grandchildren were the light of his life and he spent hundreds of hours happily watching his grandson, Owen, who was "Pa's Boy," playing ball. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, cheering for the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Gamecocks, and spending time with his friends and loved ones.
A carpenter by trade, Mr. Grooms designed and built the home that he and Kathy raised their three daughters in. Especially skilled at custom finishing work, he is responsible for many of the most beautiful homes in this part of South Carolina.
Cecil is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, of the home as well as their daughters: Kristi Grooms of Chapin, Danielle (Brian) Johnson of Cheraw, and Whitney (Alan) Sanders, also of Cheraw. Mr. Grooms was an adored "Pa" to his grandchildren: Jonah, Brianna, Blake, Gracie, Owen, and Ella Kate Johnson as well as Luke, Harper, and Abel Sanders. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Gladys Grooms, his siblings Arlene (Rex) Hancock, Troy Grooms, and Jeff Grooms, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Sims, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Mr. Grooms was preceded in death by his father, Luther P. Grooms, brother, Danny L. Grooms, two grandchildren, Michael Grooms and River Sanders, niece Vanessa Hancock, and his father-in-law Bill Sims.
His obituary was written by his oldest daughter, Kristi.
