David Hayes Whitaker, Sr.

Mr. David Hayes Whitaker, Sr., age 89, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 22, 2022 with his daughter, Terrie and grandson, Brandon by his side. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 26, 2022 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Reverend Jimmy Knotts with burial to follow in the St. John Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Whitaker was born January 22, 1933 in Chesterfield County, SC a son of the late Edmund and Mae Brock Whitaker. He retired from the SC Department of Transportation after 30 years of service and was a faithful member of Cross Branch Baptist Church where he served as former treasurer, deacon, and choir director. The epitome of a true southern Christian gentleman, Mr. Hayes loved the Lord, God’s house, and his family. He will be fondly remembered for his humble spirit, fervent prayer life, and love for his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Whitaker was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ruby Tyner Whitaker; daughter, Edna Mae Short; son-in-law, Jimmy Short; brother, C.W. Whitaker; and sisters, Mary Brown, and Margaret Brown.

Survivors include his children, daughter, Terrie W. (Robert) Miller of Florence, SC; son, David Whitaker, Patrick, SC; grandchildren; Vickie (Jody) Braswell, Jeffrey Short, Amanda (Justin) Head, Brandon (Kaylin) Whitaker, and Monica Whitaker; great grandchildren, Miracle Braswell, Braylee Head, and 1 on the way; sister-in-law, Elaine T. Outlaw, Patrick, SC; caregiver and family friend, Linda Griggs.

The family is very grateful to Dr. Vipul Shah and the entire staff of McLeod Hospice House for their extraordinary care to Mr. Whitaker in his last days.
