Dr. Phillip LeMont Hunter, 75, of Monroe passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024 at his home. His funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Douglas Rumley and Rev. Tab Whitley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:30 in the church prior to the hour of the service.
Born December 20, 1948 in Union County, he was the son of the late Johnnie Hunter and Bernice Cook Hunter. In 1967, Phillip graduated from Monroe High School. While in High School he was active in Scouting and earned the rank Eagle Scout and was also initiated as a member of Scouting’s Honorary Order of the Arrow. After graduating from High School, Phillip received his Bachelors Degree from Wingate College in 1980 and received his Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Theological Seminary in 1983. He earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in 2000. He served his country as a Chaplain in the US Army and also served his Lord as a Baptist Minister. Dr. Hunter retired from the US Army Reserve in 2010 as a Colonel and US Army Reserve Chaplain and also served at various churches in North Carolina and South Carolina during his career as a minister, including Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Troy, Northside Baptist Church in Greensboro, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Oakboro, Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Goldsboro, Grace Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Mill Creek Baptist Church in Monroe, and Oakland Baptist Church in Chesterfield, SC. He is a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Monroe.
He is survived by his High School Sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Brenda Kay Surratt Hunter. Other survivors include children Monica Kay Prizer and husband Scott of Langhorne, PA and Jeffrey LeMont Hunter of Monroe, brother Jan Hunter and wife Sang Sun Hunter of South Korea, grandchildren Shelby and Rachel Prizer. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Wayne Hunter.
