Dr. Jerome Melton died on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Sunrise of Raleigh. Born and raised on a farm in Chesterfield County, SC; he was the first child of Kirby C. and Addie Rhyne Melton. A graduate of Appalachian State and the University of NC at Chapel Hill; he served in the public schools of NC for 43 years. He was a teacher in Forsyth County, a principal in Caldwell County and Raleigh City, and a superintendent in Haywood County and Guilford County. He served for 15 years as Deputy State Superintendent of NC Public Schools. He worked with Governor Jim Hunt on several educational initiatives. Since retiring in 1991, he has been in private business and enjoyed various hobbies and volunteer work.
Known throughout NC for his dedication to children and the public schools, Dr. Melton leaves many students, educators, and citizens whose lives he touched. "A teacher, he touched the future"
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Melton, two step-children, Beth Goodson, of Raleigh and Scott Goodson and wife Waynette, of Greensboro, three brothers, Baxter "Bo" Melton and wife Frances, Ruby, SC, Troy Melton and wife Doris, Mt. Croghan, SC, and Maurice Melton of W. Columbia, SC; two sisters, Estelle Sullivan of Jefferson, SC, and Betty Sue Short of Ruby, SC
A visitation will be held in Raleigh at Mitchell Funeral Home on Sunday, April 10, 2011 from 2-4 PM. A visitation at Cross Roads Baptist Church in Ruby, South Carolina will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 1-2 PM, followed by a graveside service in the church cemetery at 2 PM.
