Dr. Lawrence Parlin Snow, Jr.
Cheraw, South Carolina
Dr. Lawrence P. Snow died Sunday, March 1, 2009. Larry was born in Toms River, New Jersey as the annual Halloween Parade passed by. He felt this was partial explanation for his wacky personality. He attended Toms River Public Schools. In 2005 he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for records set while a member of the Toms River High School Track Team.
The recipient of a Track Scholarship to New York University, Larry set High Hurdles records and graduated with a degree in Education and Social Studies. Continuing his research and studies at Seton Hall and Rutgers Universities, he received his doctoral degree.
He was a passionate educator enjoying a career spanning 39 years as teacher, administrator, principal, coach, and college professor.
After moving to Cheraw in 1995, Larry became a Lay Minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) teaching Bible Studies and filling in for vacationing ministers. He was an Elder in First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw, S.C. and White Oak Presbyterian Church, Ruby, S.C. He taught Sunday School, Bible School, Officer Training Workshops and Confirmation Classes. He delighted in the Spiritual growth and knowledge of his special Bible students and friends, Katie and John Douglas Rivers, who made his heart sing.
Among his favorite activities was walking his furry children, Sam and Brandy, while waving to all the children - young and old - who travel State Road each morning. His smile and wave started the day for many workers, students, and parents. He loved them all.
Larry was known for his cheerful disposition and his devotion to God, church, and his wife, Susan. She was the love of his life and he of hers. He lived each day with a zest for life and a happiness of spirit. He was proud and honored to have performed the marriage ceremony uniting his beloved God-daughter, Molly Freeman, with Joey Miller at Hilton Head Island in October, 2008.
In addition to Susan Gibson Snow, Molly and Joey Miller, Brandy and Sam Snow, Larry is survived by Cathy, Fred and Cara Heaton (daughter, son-in-law, grand-daughter) of Durham, N.C.; Barbara Snow, Ian Ghahate`, Jonnie Ghahate`, Jennifer Espinoza (daughter, grandson, grand-daughters) of Albuquerque, N.M.; Atha Lou Gibson (mother-in-law) of Cheraw, S.C.; Jimmy and Julieth Freeman of Chesterfield, S.C., Mike and Phyllis Freeman of Fayetteville, N.C., Congregation of White Oak Presbyterian Church, and furry niece, Gigi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence P. Snow, Sr. and Helen Snow Wilsey; grand-daughter, Molly Espinoza; and furry children, Toto and Dorothy Snow.
A "Gathering of Family and Friends" will be held at 7:00 p.m., March 4, 2009 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield, South Carolina followed by Larry's favorite - "Meet and Greet Time". Everyone is invited to attend.
