First Sgt. James Daniel "Jimmy" Coombes, age 56, entered into rest on Monday, August 2, 2021 at his home. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, August 6, 2021 from the Gymnasium at New Heights Middle School by CCSO Chaplain Pastor Andy Wells and Rev. David Christopher. Burial with honors performed by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office will follow in the Jefferson Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Friday, prior to the service in the school gymnasium.
The public is invited for a time of viewing and paying of respects between the hours of 1:00 – 6:00 PM Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Officer Coombes was born June 9, 1965 in Bennettsville, SC a son of Henry Brock and Donna Jean Coombes Brock. He was a graduate of Wallace High School and a member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church. A man with a true servant’s heart, Jimmy joined the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office on September 7, 2001 as a Deputy. Due to his work ethic and dedication, Officer Coombes was promoted to Sergeant in 2007, and in 2015 received the promotion of First Sergeant. First Sgt. Coombes was a two-time recipient of the Employee of the Quarter award and was a friend to all that worked with him. A true people person, Jimmy developed many friendships during his career and especially during his assignments to the Town of McBee and Town of Jefferson. He also enjoyed woodworking and “tinkering” as a mechanic. In his words, he was a “Jack of all trades, and master of none!”
Officer Coombes was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Jerry N. Sullivan.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Davis Coombes of the home; son, Daniel Scott (Winter) Coombes of Cheraw, SC; grandson, Cooper Daniel Coombes; step-son, Devin Mills of Jefferson, SC; father, Henry Brock of Cheraw, SC; mother, Donna Jean Coombes Brock of DeFuniak Springs, FL; sisters, Sara (Andy) Blackmon of Pensacola, FL, and Lisa (Manny) Ryan of DeFuniak Springs, FL; mother-in-law, Libby Sullivan of Jefferson, SC; numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved extended family at Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Memorials may be made to Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, 203 Watson Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709 for a special fund that has been created in his memory to help children in Chesterfield County.
Active Pallbearers will be: Spence Vaughn, Troy Ellerbe, Timmy Knight, Joey Carnes, Clarence Francis, Scott Griffin, Sheriff James Dixon, Chris Page, Dewayne Gillespie, Stuart Robinson, Wayne Jordan, and Josh Hyatt.
Honorary Pallbearers will be: Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement present.
