VISITATION: 2:00 - 6:00 P.M. Sunday, November 28, 2010 at the Bell residence, 410 Ivy Avenue, Chesterfield, SC
HISTORY: Mr. Bell was born February 22, 1921, on a farm in Wampee, SC, a son of the late Oree Jerome and Reatha Carter Bell. He attended Clemson College, the University of Miami, and received his LLB in 1951 from the University of SC Law School. Mr. Bell began his law practice in Chesterfield, SC in 1951, and served as an attorney for more than 50 years. He was also a partner in B&D Land Development.
He was always interested in politics and served as former chairman of the Chesterfield County Democratic party, and also a former member of the Democratic Executive Committee. Mr. Bell was mayor of Chesterfield from 1955-1957. He served in the SC House of Representatives from 1961-1972, and was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee his last 2 years in the House.
Mr. Bell was very instrumental in the development of Green River Country Club, and served as one of the clubs first Board of Directors. He was past president of the Greater Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Civitans, Chesterfield Service Club, member of the American Legion Post 74, and the 40 and 8. He had a great love for flying, and has been known to land his plane on the sandy shores of North Myrtle Beach.
Mr. Bell was a U.S. Navy Air Corps Veteran, serving during WWII. He was a member of the Chesterfield Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and former Church Treasurer.
Mr. Bell was honored in 2005 by having a local bridge named in his honor. With the many accomplishments in business and politics, little was ever said of his ballroom dancing ability, but many say he and his wife were a picture of grace on the dance floor.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn McElveen Bell and by his brother, Jerome Bell.

2 Great Grandchildren: Arial Brianna Gregory and John Low Gregory II
2 Brothers: Joseph Bell of Charleston, SC and Ralph Bell of Greenville, SC
4 Sisters: Clarice Ritter of Bamberg, SC, Esther Boyd of Plano, TX, Doris Gump of Fredericksburg, VA, and Loy Ree Ballam of Charleston, SC
