Herman Earl Cain, Jr, of 370 Cain Patch Lane, Mt. Croghan, SC, retired school superintendent, died on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Herman Cain was born in McBee, SC on June 30, 1923. He was the son of the late Dr. Herman Earl Cain and the late Corine Segars Cain Rowland.

As school superintendent he served in Horry, Georgetown, Edgefield, and Orangeburg Counties. He retired from Holly Hill School District Three on June 30, 1988 after serving the school district as superintendent for 13 years, and 36 total years of outstanding service in education.

Before he volunteered for service in World War II, he was a student at the Citadel in Charleston, SC. He served in the 80th Division 318th Infantry, in a machine gun company while in the Army. He was wounded twice in action and was awarded the Purple Heart with Cluster. In addition to the Purple Heart he received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, European Campaign Medal with Battle Stars, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. At the time of his discharge, Herman had attained the rank of Sergeant. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

After serving his country in the army, he graduated from Presbyterian College and later earned a Masters Degree from Western Carolina University. Herman was a member of the South Carolina Education Association, American Association of School Superintendents and Phi Delta Kappa.

He was a fancier of game fowl, which he owned for over 70 years. He served several years as President of the South Carolina Game Fowl Association and served on the Board of the National Game Fowl Association.

Herman was a Methodist and served his church in the past as a member on the Board of Stewards, Sunday School Superintendent, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Church Lay Leader and Associate District Lay Leader.

Herman is survived by a daughter, Jodi Cain Smith Hancock and husband Donnie Hancock of Augusta, GA., a son of the home, Herman Earl Cain, III, a son Myron Cain of Augusta, GA., 2 grandchildren Jeffrey Smith and Joseph Smith of Augusta, GA., a sister Dottie Grant and husband Richard of Newland, NC. He was predeceased in death by a son Bart Cain of Georgetown, SC and a son-in-law Jeff Smith of Augusta, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McBee United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 207, McBee, SC 29101 or to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, 318 E. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Funeral Services for Mr. Herman Earl Cain, Jr. will be held 2:00 PM Friday, April 22, 2011 at McBee United Methodist Church. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the McBee Cemetery.
