Howard Barnard Campbell, 91, of Chesterfield, died Thursday, September 12, 2013. Barnard was born October 28, 1921, in Anson County, NC, to the late John Sanford and Carrie Stroud Campbell.
Barnard was an Army Veteran having served our country in the South West Pacific Theatre of WWII. He and his late wife, Mary Virginia Teal Campbell, owned and operated T&C Grocery for many years. He was a life-long member of Sandy Plains United Methodist Church and attended church faithfully as long as his health allowed. He was a member of American Legion Post 74 for 65 years and enjoyed helping the post display flags around town every holiday and taking fellow veterans to VA appointments as long as he was physically able. He was honored as the post's Legionnaire of the Year in 1994. He was a humble man who quietly provided help to many through the years.
Surviving are his daughter, Crystal Miller, grandson, John (Natalie) Douglas, great-grandsons, Campbell Douglas and Will Douglas, brother, Ed (Tippy) Campbell, all of Chesterfield, SC, brother-in-law, Rev. Bert Watson of Lancaster, SC and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, sisters, Venice Huntley and Valda Campbell, and son-in-law, Tony Miller.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 2 PM in the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mae Melton, Nezzie Bennett, Maxine Hayden, Dr. John McLeod, Dr. Shaw Newsom and the staffs of Springhill Assisted Living, Chesterfield Convalescent Center, Chesterfield General Hospital and Hospice of Chesterfield County for the loving care provided to Mr. Campbell.
