Iris G. Brown

          Ms. Iris Gardner Brown, age 87, entered into rest on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at her home. The family will hold a private committal service.

          Ms. Brown was born August 27, 1935 in Pulaski, VA a daughter of the late Lowman A. and Jessie Iris Blakenship Gardner. She was a retired employee with the City of Newport News and an animal enthusiast who had a special place in her heart for horses. Iris was also an avid reader and treasured her friends who brightened her life.

          In addition to her parents, Ms. Brown was also preceded in death by her brother, Alfred Martin Gardner; and sister, Mary Alice Gardner Tolbert Murphy.

          Survivors include her children, Jessie (Angela Hopkins) Capley of Columbia, SC, Carolyn (Victor) Gray of Meherrin, VA, Jan Filipiak of Fountain Hill, AZ, and Dennis Dewayne Brown of Canada; grandchildren, Justin Shank of Raleigh, NC, and Nicholas Shank of VT; 4 great grandchildren; and niece, Rose Brownwell of Queenstown, MD.

          Memorials may be made to a favorite animal charity or rescue operation of one’s choice.
