Mrs. Jennie Mae Poole Curtis, age 96, entered into rest on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at her home. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Susan Culler with burial to follow in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Curtis was born May 9, 1920 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Frank and Carrie Blalock Poole. She was a graduate of Pfeiffer College and a retired employee of Federal Land Bank with over 30 years of service. Mrs. Curtis was a faithful member of Washington Street United Methodist Church where she was very active and dedicated to the Soup Kitchen Ministry. She was the recipient of the Woman of the Year award in 2002 presented by her church family. Jennie Mae enjoyed gardening, and sharing her vegetables with neighbors and friends. She loved her family, and was very instrumental in planning and organizing family reunions, and attending the annual Poole family “Cousin’s Walk.”
In addition to her parents, Jennie Mae was preceded in death by her beloved husband, LeRoy Curtis; 3 brothers, John Milton, Howard Y., and Don Poole; 4 sisters, Myrtis Poole, Evelyn P. Ellis, Marguerite P. Snipes, Martha Lucille P. Gayle; and 1 nephew, John P. Causey, III.
Survivors include her sister, Catherine Causey of Conway, SC; 2 sisters-in-law, Lois A. Poole, and Josephine S. “Joker” Poole both of Chesterfield, SC; nieces and nephews, Gary Poole of Atlanta, GA, Ervin Poole of Chesterfield, SC, Patsy Keith of Cheraw, SC, Mickey Lockey of Cheraw, SC, Edward Poole of Atlanta, GA, Mary Murray of Spring Hope, NC, Saundra McLeod of Sumter, SC, and Lynn Gayle of Onancock, VA; her adopted family of the heart, Kelli (Dr. Rodney) Rhinehart of Columbia, SC and their children, Gabrielle, Hamilton, and Ellie whom she was affectionately known to as “Me-Maw”; Special Caregiver, Brenda Hutto of Columbia, SC, and a host of friends that were very special to her.
The family cordially requests memorials be made in Mrs. Curtis’ memory to the Washington Street United Methodist Church “Soup Kitchen Ministry”, 1401 Washington Street, Columbia, SC 29201
