John Griggs

Morven, NC

Mr. John Wesley, "Nookie" Griggs went peacefully into the arms of Jesus, May 21, 2015 surrounded by family and friends. He was born September 11, 1933 in Cason's Old Field, SC, the son of the late Thurston and Bernice Vaughn Griggs. He was a loving and devoted husband to Donnie Faye Boswell Griggs for 59 years and 11 months. He had one daughter Karen Helms, a son-in-law that he loved like a son, Chuck Helms and a grandson, Wesley Helms who was the apple of his eye. He was also survived by his brother, Carl Thomas Griggs and his wife, Frances of Wadesboro, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

One of his hopes was to be healthy enough to witness Wesley's marriage to Kerry Ricketts on May 1 of 2014, which he was able to do. Nookie was a graduate of Deep Creek High School and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Morven, NC. He faithfully served his community over the years as Town Councilman and Volunteer Firefighter. Nookie served the Morven Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years serving 15 of those years as Chief. He worked at Morven Hardware, Steagall Oil Company, and retired from Jackson Oil Company in 2001.

Upon retirement Nookie joined his son-in-law Chuck, and grandson Wesley, at Helms Farms doing various maintenance and repair and grass cutting. The last 2 years of his life he served as overseer of the day to day farming operations from the driver's seat of his truck, a lounge chair at the Shop and even from his recliner as he kept up with all that was going on.

Nookie loved his family and friends. He loved fishing, going to the beach and helping on the farm. He was a kind man with heart of gold that will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his parents, Nookie was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Harold Griggs, Boyce Griggs and Charles Griggs.
