Mr. Mayfield was born January 29, 1949 in Concord, NC a son of the late Thomas Marvin and Kate Alee Adcock Mayfield. He attained his bachelor’s degree from Pfeiffer College and earned his Master’s Degree of Education from the University of Tennessee. He accepted a full-time teaching position with Chesterfield High School in 1971 that spanned over forty-seven years.
A man who truly embodied the spirit of Chesterfield High School, John invested his life into the students of Chesterfield by teaching English, history, and adult education. He served as the Saturday school coordinator, the summer school coordinator, the yearbook staff and picture coordinator, and served as a teacher evaluator. Mr. Mayfield also served in the capacity of Homebound Teacher, gate keeper at athletic events, and was a long-term substitute teacher for the past nine years. One of his greatest passions was being involved with the Chesterfield County Alpha Arts.
Mr. Mayfield was an avid reader and book collector. Outside of school he enjoyed attending theatrical plays and symphonies. He also enjoyed going out to eat and trying new foods. An optimistic man who always saw the “glass half-full”, John never met a stranger and always saw the good in others. One of his favorite topics of conversation was, “I taught your parents and grandparents.”
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mayfield was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Ada Adcock.
Survivors include his beloved brother, Jerry (Nicole) Mayfield of Waxhaw, NC; aunt, Ellen Keziah of Monroe, NC; brother of the heart, Barry (Barbara) Garrison; daughters of the heart, Nicki Garrison (Dave) Mintz and Natalie Garrison (Tim) Sielaf; numerous cousins, friends, and his extended family at Chesterfield High School.
