Jule Smith, age 88, of 1201 State Road, Cheraw, SC passed away peacefully on May 6, 2012. Suffering from a stroke in December 2011, he fought gallantly until his passing. He was born on January 14, 1924 in the Shiloh Community, outside of Chesterfield, SC. He was the son of the late John A. and Ada M. Coley Smith. Mr. Smith was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife, and lifelong partner, Elizabeth Davis Smith. They shared an amazing life together for over 69 years. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were his pride and joy.

He is also survived by his sons, Jule Garreth Smith of Isle of Palms, SC, Kenneth Hudson Smith and his wife Angela of Cheraw, SC; daughters, Phyllis Smith Silva of Lexington, SC, Sherri Smith Thurman and her husband Rev. Ronald Thurman of Ruby, SC; he is also survived by his sister, Mary Lee Johansson, and predeceased by 1 sister, Emma S.Wadsworth; and 2 brothers, Charles W. Smith and J. Roy Smith.

He is blessed with 8 grandchildren, Jay G. (Celeste) Smith, of Atlanta, GA, Jim Thomas (Sydney) Smith of Sonoma, CA, Kenneth Hudson Smith, II of Cheraw, SC, Zachary Harrison Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC, Bonnie Elizabeth (Wesley) Owens of Wagner, SC, Melissa Hope Silva of Lexington, SC, Caroline Lorraine Silva of Ladson, SC, and Cassie Christine (Leslie) Davis of Chesterfield, SC; 7 Great Grandchildren, Georgia Reed Smith, Brynn Elizabeth Smith, James Thurston Smith, Alexis Marie Silva, Brooklyn Madison Alford, Isabelle Marie Owens, Aubrey Paige Owens; also numerous nieces and nephews.

A man of integrity, strength, and endurance, he never wavered during trials. He loved golfing, and spent many years playing golf with his great friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was known for his friendly disposition. Gardening was a love of his, and he would always have a bountiful tomato crop which he shared with others. Mr. Smith was an avid and lifelong USC Gamecock fan, and always followed all the gamecock teams.

Mr. Smith served our great country in the U.S. Navy during WW II, stationed on the USS Mendocino, and the USS Herzog destroyer.

A small business owner for most of his life, his work ethic was unparalleled. After retirement he continued to work at the Country Kitchen until the age of 87 years old. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Chesterfield, SC. He was a family man and loved spending time with all of them. He was also devoted to his many friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Jule Smith will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, SC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mr. Jule Smith will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, SC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow in the Chesterfield Cemetery.
