Margaret Ligon Campbell, age 92, passed away peacefully at Hospice Home of Rockingham, Wentworth, NC, on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, Mrs. Campbell was born on May 12, 1919, at home in the Greenbrier Community of Fairfield County, SC. She was the daughter of the late Walter William and Ruby Platt Ligon and was the fifth born of seven sisters who remained lifelong friends and confidants. She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1939 and taught in Georgia and Florida before settling down in Chesterfield and marrying Harlan Campbell on July 4, 1948.
Mrs. Campbell retired from the Chesterfield County School System in 1976 after serving 32 years as a teacher and librarian in Chesterfield High School and Ruby High and Elementary Schools where she was named STAR Teacher of the Year, had the yearbook dedicated to her in 1967, and received the Chesterfield County Teacher's Association Teacher Citizen Award in 1979. She was initiated into the Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society in 1966 where she joined other distinctive women educators in spiritual fellowship and service. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mrs. Campbell remained a dedicated member of St. Paul United Methodist Church all her life. She enjoyed being a member of the church women's Amelia Craig Circle and was committed to being the counselor and spiritual leader of St. Paul's youth group for 15 years. Her friends and family in Chesterfield continued to be a special part of her life through phone calls and letters.
Mrs. Campbell moved to Reidsville, NC, in 1988 to spend time with her grandchildren. She was welcomed into the love of Speedwell Presbyterian Church where she found many caring friends and attended for more than 15 years. Mrs. Campbell continued her community service after moving to Reidsville by being involved in four local nonprofit organizations.
After a yearlong residence in the attentive hands of the staff at Highgrove Longterm Care Center, Mrs. Campbell was taken to Hospice Home of Rockingham County where she was surrounded by comfort and care.
Surviving family members include her daughters, Diana Kaye Campbell of Winston-Salem, NC, and Joye Campbell Donovant and husband, Johnny, of Reidsville, NC; three grandsons, Jack Tyler and wife, Cyndi, of San Fransisco, CA, Sam Tyler and wife, Sarah, of Baltimore, MD, and Patrick Donovant of Reidsville, NC; many loved and loving nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harlan Campbell of Chesterfield, SC, and six sisters: Abby Arrants and Ruby Castles of Columbia, SC, Doris Mims of Summerton, SC, and Mary Chapman, Alice Beckham, and Elizabeth Brown of Winnsboro, SC.
The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall parlor of St. Paul United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 10:00-11:00 am, followed by the service in the church sanctuary at 11:00 am with interment following in the Chesterfield Cemetery.
