Margaret Tart Sowell died peacefully at her home in Chesterfield on January 31, 2017.

She was born on April 20, 1929, in Marion, South Carolina, the daughter of Addison Luther and Jessie McLaurin Tart, and was their last surviving child. She graduated from Marion High School and Winthrop College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She also earned a Masters of Education from Winthrop.

In 1950 she married T. F. Sowell and moved to his native Chesterfield. She worked her entire life in the Chesterfield County Schools as second grade teacher, public school music teacher, and speech pathologist. She directed the Glee Club at Chesterfield High School and the chancel choir at St. Paul United Methodist Church for forty years.

She was a member and President of the Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member and Regent of the Old Cheraws Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and T.F. were Chesterfield County Farm Family of the Year in the late 1960s.

She was the most graceful of people. She loved music and travel and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Margaret is survived by four children and their spouses--Biff and Jan Sowell (Columbia), Amy and James Braswell (Pendleton), Marshall and Betty Sowell (Chesterfield), and Mary Margaret and Scott Rosenbloom (Knoxville). She also is survived by grandchildren Christy Braswell and Jessica Braswell (Pendleton), Carson and Ashley Twombley (Beaufort), Jill Sowell (Louisville, CO), Evan and Jennifer Sowell (Pickens), Ben Mosrie and Ella Mosrie (Knoxville), and great grandchildren Mac Twombley, Will Twombley, EJ Sowell, Emmie Sowell, and Mattison Braswell. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters and by her husband of 64 years, T.F. Sowell.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Lessie Smith, Doris Ellis, and Crystal Smith for their loving care over the last two years.

Memorials can be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 West Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3rd at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chesterfield. The family will host a reception and greet friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
