Ms. Maria Anne Matthews, age 60, entered into rest on Monday, April 29, 2024. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 3, 2024 at Chesterfield Cemetery officiated by Pastor Alisha Hansen. The family will greet extended family and friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

Maria was born on June 28, 1963 in Chesterfield, SC. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William David “Bill” Matthews, Sr. She attended Chesterfield High School and was a proud member of the Class of 1984. With a heart of gold, she spent many years after high school volunteering at St. Paul UMC Daycare where children of all ages loved their “Miss Maria”. A lover of beach music, she treasured every opportunity to travel to the beach. She will be remembered for amazing ability to recall every single word to any beach music song that came on the radio. She was also a proud Clemson football fan and enjoyed traveling to Clemson to cheer on “her Tigers” alongside her family for many years.

In the face of adversity, Maria demonstrated unwavering courage and resilience, leaving behind a legacy of strength and perseverance. Her hardships never defined her nor did they dim her spirit or smile.

Survivors include her brother, protector, and best friend, William David Matthews, Jr.; beloved sister-in-law, Mary Alice Matthews; three nieces, Melissa Matthews Martin (Eric), Leslie Matthews Dillard (Brian), and Elizabeth Matthews Weir (Bobby); one great-niece, Emily Jean Martin; and four great nephews, William David Martin, Marshall Austin Dillard, Lincoln Andrew Dillard, and Robert Lee Weir, III.

The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the workers and staff of CHESCO services for providing such good care over the years and also to the staff of Cheraw Healthcare.
