HISTORY: Mary Wells was born March 14, 1921 to Thomas George and Annie Mae Frye Griggs in Ruby, SC., and was the ninth of ten children. She was a 1938 graduate of Ruby High School where she played basketball. She attended Limestone College in Gaffney, SC from 1939 - 1942 receiving her degree in Business Office Management. After a brief tenure at The Santee Cooper Commission in Columbia, she headed to Charleston to work at the Port of Embarkation. There she met and married Lieutenant JG James E. Reagan, Sr. of San Marino, CA in a small private ceremony on February 25, 1945 at her family home in Ruby, SC.
After the war they lived in San Diego, CA for 3 years. They returned to South Carolina in 1949 for Mr. Reagan to complete his Juris Doctorate Degree at the University of South Carolina. They moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1957 and were founding members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Mr. Reagan passed away in 1977 and Mary remained in Winston-Salem until she moved to Cheraw, SC in 1999. She lived there until 2008 and was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Cheraw. Declining health forced her to move to Duluth, GA in 2008 to live with her daughter Kelly. A year later she moved to Brighton Gardens in Winston-Salem where she resided until her death.
Mary Wells will be remembered as a dear and devoted mother and a true and loyal friend. She was a strong and independent woman who lived life on her own terms. Her strength of will and her brightness of spirit will shine long beyond her passing. Her greatest gifts come from the many friendships that she made, and the values and virtues by which she lived. She touched the lives of many; she will be sorely missed.
