McBee, SC – Mr. Matthew Kenneth “Bird” Crawley, age 42, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025. His funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, in the McBee High School Gymnasium. The service will be officiated by Pastor Glenn Scott White, along with Assistant Principal David Morgan, who was a long-time friend of Matthew. Following the service, burial will take place in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 17, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.


Mr. Crawley was born on January 30, 1983, in Charlotte, NC, to Alice Ann Shaw Morton and the late Edwin Kenneth “Kenny” Crawley, Jr. A 2001 graduate of Chesterfield High School, he continued his education and earned his bachelor’s degree from Limestone College. In 2006, he began his career as a music teacher and band director within the Chesterfield County School District, where he positively influenced the lives of many students. Matthew had a remarkable gift for connecting with each of his students, always encouraging them to reach their full potential because he genuinely believed in their abilities. His life’s mission was to make a difference in the lives of others. His favorite pastimes included sharing meals with family and friends, enjoying rides and sightseeing. Above all, Matthew deeply loved his family, always treating his nieces and nephews as his own children.


In addition to his father, Matthew was preceded in death by his sister, Rebekah Anne Crawley; maternal grandparents, Dale and Alice Shaw; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Mary Frances Crawley, Sr.; and cousin, Benjamin Shaw.


He is survived by his mother, Alice Ann (Phillip) Morton of McBee, SC; brother, Michael (Brooke) Crawley of McBee, SC; sister, Lindsay (Adam) Lewis of Kershaw, SC; step-brothers, Kyle Morton, and Josh Morton both of McBee, SC; and a host of nieces and nephews: Mackenzie, Katelynn, Jacob, and Rebekah Lewis, Bayleigh, Bradyn, and Brystol Crawley, as well as great-niece, Tinslee Baker; numerous other cherished relatives, including special aunt, Mary Jean Freeman of Ruby, SC; special cousins, Jena Crowder of Patrick, SC, and Bessie Freeman of Statesboro, GA; and his adopted mother, Jaime Rivers of McBee, SC.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Spirit of McBee Band,” P.O. Box 218, McBee, SC 29101.
