MAYROW WALTER WATSON, age 94, died peacefully Saturday, October 5, 2013 at his home in Mt. Croghan, S.C. A life-long member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, he was born February 21, 1919 in Mt. Croghan, SC, and lived most of his life there. He was the son of the late Levin Andrew and Minnie Rosa Lowery Watson.

At the beginning of World War II, he supported the effort as a ship construction welder in Baltimore, Md., and enjoyed building and home improvement as an avocation throughout his life. Entering the U.S. Army in 1944, he served with the 95th Infantry Division in France and Germany until the war's end, and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military service awards include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, WW II Victory Medal, and European Service Medal with two Bronze Stars.

During his long business career as Staff Manager with Life Insurance Company of Georgia, Mr. Watson was often rewarded with national and international convention trips to recognize insurance sales achievement. He also served as Commander of American Legion Post 134 and received American Legion awards as Outstanding Post Commander and Post Commander of the Year. He helped found and govern the Chesterfield County Rural Water Company.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca Huntley Watson, after a marriage of more than 60 years; and also his brother, Levin Orren Watson and his wife Lena. He is survived by son, Larry A. Watson and wife Miriam of Los Angeles, CA; son, James H. Watson and wife Kathy of Snellville, GA; daughter, Debra Watson Taylor and husband James O. Taylor, III. of Mt. Croghan, SC; and grandchildren, Johnathan Watson and Caroline Watson of Snellville, GA.

On September 30, 2013, for his personal integrity, self reliance, life of service, and family devotion, his family presented him with a proclamation of honored membership in The Greatest Generation.

Funeral services for Mr. Watson will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Mt. Croghan, SC with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.
