Nancy Page Funderburk Robeson, 86, died Saturday, April 18, 2015. She was born on August 3, 1928 in Cheraw, SC. She was the daughter of the late Dr. James Ernest Funderburk and Mary Claire Sellers Funderburk. She attended Cheraw Public Schools and graduated from Winthrop College in 1949 with a B.S. in Sociology. At Winthrop, she was chosen "Most Popular" in her senior class. In December 1948, she married Edwin Robeson of Cheraw, with the agreement with her father that she would complete her college education.
Upon her graduation, Mrs. Robeson began her career with the Department of Social Services in Chesterfield County as a social worker for 15 years. A lifelong educator, she worked in the Chesterfield County public school system as a classroom teacher and guidance counselor for 17 years before retiring in 1985. In recognition of her dedication to education, she was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma International, an education sorority, in 1979. She served as president of the Omicron Chapter from 1988-1990.
Mrs. Robeson was a member of the Old Cheraws Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving on the program committee, and received her pin for 50 years of service in January of 2001. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Cheraw and served as a Deacon, Elder, and an original member of the Endowment Committee. As a member of the Women of the Church, she served as circle leader and received the Honorary Life Membership award.
Mrs. Robeson is survived by her sons, Edwin (Sylvia) W. Robeson Jr.of Marietta, Georgia and James Ervin (Jane) Robeson of Huger, SC and daughter Kim (David) Robeson Brabham of Cheraw, SC. Her grandchildren are: Edwin W. Robeson III of Marietta, Meg (Brian) Ross of Marietta, David Brabham Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, James Ervin Robeson, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, and Laura Brabham of Clemson University. She is also survived by one great granddaughter, Annie Ross of Marietta,her sister, Mrs. Jean Smoak, of Easley, SC, sister in law, Connie Funderburk of Florence, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, her stepmother Mrs. Effie Wall Funderburk, her husband Edwin W. Robeson Sr. and by eight siblings.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Chesterfield County and Jenny Wallace, Cindy Gibson, Rachel Curtis, Annie McQueen, and Brenda Moore for their compassion, devotion, and care during her illness.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, April 24, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Building from 5:00-7:00. A Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, Boy Scout Troop 655, or First Presbyterian Church kitchen renovation fund.
