He battled valiantly against Alzheimer's. He never lost the brave sense of his “get it done” attitude and continued to be a strong example of uncomplaining strength.
Tom was born December 28th, 1939 in Chesterfield , SC a son of the late Charles “Charlie” and Irene Gainey Goodale. His younger years were spent on the family farm and after graduating from Chesterfield High school he enlisted in the air force. His years in the Air Force led him to discover his love of boxing and far away places like Okinawa, Japan where he served at Kadena Air Force base.
Tom also served at Ellsworth Air Force base in Rapid City, South Dakota. Rapid City remained dear to him and he returned many times throughout his life. His desire to be close to his family brought him back to Chesterfield where he spent 36 years as a dedicated employee of JP Stevens Delta #2 Plant ultimately retiring and starting a new career at INA.
A lifelong lover of “anything that could be done while driving a tractor”. He spent countless hours mowing his pastures, plowing his fields and gazing at his cattle. It made his heart happy knowing he worked the same fields his father had worked.
Tom is known affectionately as our family’s “Burt Reynolds” and could be found dancing so hard that the coins in his pockets would fly to the floor. While his best day was spent on his tractor, his second best day was spent with his son and brothers enjoying a competitive game of golf .
He was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where he served as Chamber of the Trustees. He was proud that his family had strong ties to the church history. His pride and joy was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Tom was man of few words who taught them to stand strong in the face of adversity, that hard work pays off and nothing worthy comes easy.
Later in life God showed him what true, unconditional love was in the form of his “wife of the heart”, Pat.
His children Cindy, Peggy, Tommy and Beth along with his loving brothers Jerry and WM will miss him terribly.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Peggy Morrow, Catherine Davis, Elizabeth Goodale, brother Donnie Goodale; and niece, Tracy Rhyne.
