Rachel Robeson King, 91 passed away on June 20, 2019 peacefully at the Hospice House in Florence, SC, with her family by her side. She had been a resident of Cheraw Healthcare for eight years where she received great care and made many friends. She was born in Chesterfield on December 31, 1927, the daughter of Leon Barton and Maggie Lee Streater Robeson. Rachel was the oldest of 5 children, W.F. (Bill) & Peggy, Mary Beth Robeson Freeman, Rebecca Robeson Burch, Helen Robeson Moore. She graduated from Zoar High School in 1944 – Valedictorian of her class. Rachel also attended Draughon Business College in Nashville, Tennessee.
She met Hubert Carvin King on August 15, 1945 on “VJ” Day at a celebration uptown Chesterfield. They were married on November 28, 1946 (Thanksgiving Day) had 4 children and were happy for almost 56 years until Carvin’s death in May 2002. Rachel was a stay-at-home Mother until she began work as a bookkeeper and in 1957 she went to work for the Farm Service Agency formerly known as the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service Center in Chesterfield. ASCS is an office who helps and works with farmers and land owners to help sign up for government programs. Rachel retired after 30 years of loyal service. She and Carvin would have 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. They became early campers when they took the kids to Cheraw Beach. In the early 70’s they began camping at Ocean Lakes Campground and loved it so much they bought a camper in 1978. They loved the beach and met camping buddies along the way who were from Canada and other states who enjoyed it, too! They would reserve time for several weeks in the spring & fall after Carvin & Rachel retired. They enjoyed their “home away from home”. Rachel would always say to “Enjoy every minute”! They were also members of the “Square Dance Club” who met at GRCC for great times & memories. She enjoyed playing Blitz, going to movies & finding new vacation spots when the “Sisters Trip” would come around. Rachel enjoyed reading and traveling with their dear friends, Ruth & C.J. Eddins. She & C.J. both were members of the SC Association of County Office Employees and a charter member of the Retiree Association. Rachel also served as church treasurer at Shiloh United Methodist church for 25 years. She was also a member of Shiloh United Methodist Women and served them well for many years as secretary. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them as much as possible.
Rachel is survived by her children & spouses – Tom & Jackie King (Eatonton, Ga.) Steve & Debbie King (Chesterfield, SC) Don & Susan King Felts (Chesterfield, SC) John & Susan King (Chesterfield, SC) Grandchildren: Aimee King Carstarphen &Danny (Columbus, Ga.) Erin King Smith & Brent (Forsyth, Ga.) Elizabeth Felts Cook & Chris (Shickshinny, Pa.) James Felts & Heather (Chesterfield, SC) Christopher King (Columbia, SC) Will King (Chesterfield, SC). Great Grandchildren: Logan & Emily Carstarphen, Leah & Lucy Smith, Cari & Gabe Chavis, Mason & Rylie Felts. She was predeceased by her huband-Hubert Carvin King, brother-W.F. (Bill) Robeson, sister-Mary Beth Robeson Freeman, three brothers-in-law-Preston Freeman, Larry Burch & Michael Moore.
Visitation will be held at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home on Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Chesterfield at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2019 officiated by Pastor Fred McDaniel with burial immediately after service in Shiloh Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 3154 Hwy #102, Chesterfield, SC 29709, McLeod Hospice House of Florence, SC, 1203 E. Cheves St. Florence, SC 29506.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of McLeod Hospice & Hospice House of Florence and Cheraw Healthcare. Also, special caregiver, Kathleen James (Kat). We appreciate the loving care given for many years!
