DECEASED: Reverend R. W. Shelton, Sr., age 76, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his home.

HISTORY: Rev. Shelton was born April 17, 1933 in Sauratown Mountain, NC, a son of the late James Madison and Winnie Johnson Shelton. He accepted the call to preach at age 18 and faithfully preached the gospel and pastored for over 49 years. Rev. Shelton organized and pastored the Solid Rock Baptist Church of Greensboro, NC, pastored the Maple Grove Baptist Church of Weddington, NC, organized and pastored the Prospect Baptist Church of Monroe, NC, and pastored the Grace Baptist Church of Sanford, NC. He organized and moderated the Tri-State Independent Baptist Preachers Fellowship. Rev. Shelton was a Spiritual Leader and Mentor to many young preachers and pastors. He was faithful to his local radio broadcast for over 25 years, where he was affectionately known to everyone as the "Old-Fashioned Country Preacher." In addition to his parents, Rev. Shelton was preceded in death by 2 sons, Rupert Shelton, Jr., and Milton Leon Shelton; 3 brothers, Samuel, Paul, and James Shelton; 3 sisters, Leila Copple, Novella Powers, and Myrtle Marshall; and by his grandson, Michael Shelton on April 14, 2009.

2 Sons: Jerry Lynn (Janet) Shelton of Monroe, NC, and Thomas C. (Holly) Shelton of Pageland, SC
2 Daughters: Wanda Shelton (Vernon) Parrish of Oak Ridge, NC and Virginia Gail Green of Shallotte, NC
Also 18 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren
