A native of Chesterfield County, Rev. Miles was born in the Black Creek Community on September 14, 1931, to Walker B. and Nettie Short Miles. He was number nine of thirteen children. Rev. Miles' family attended Cross Roads Baptist Church, where he made a profession of faith and was baptized at age 16, but, as he recalls, truly started serving the Lord with his whole heart at age 19. Rev. Miles served Cross Roads church as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and music director. Feeling led into the ministry, he attended Wingate College as a ministerial student.
After following Gods plan into the ministry, all of Rev. Miles' pastorates were in Chesterfield County. After serving Clanton Plains Baptist Church for eight months as interim, he accepted that church's pastorate and was ordained in 1961. He pastored Clanton Plains Baptist Church and Oakland Baptist Church together until 1965. He then left Clanton Plains and began pastoring Brocks Mill Baptist Church while continuing to pastor Oakland. Thirteen months later, while still pastoring Oakland, he left Brocks Mill
to accept the pastoral call to Lower Macedonia Baptist Church and continued to pastor both until 1971. At that time, Lower Macedonia Baptist Church decided to move towards a full time ministry, thus Rev. Miles left Oakland Church and continued as a pastor of Lower Macedonia until his retirement in 1999.
During these years of pastoring, Rev. Miles was active on the associational level of ministry as well. He faithfully served Chesterfield Baptist Association in the following capacities, Brotherhood Director; Associational Music Director; Secretary of Pastor's Conference; Connie Maxwell Children's Home representative; Secretary Treasurer of the
Building Committee for the Freedom Chapel; Time, Place and Preacher Committee; Stewardship Committee; and chairman of the Presbytery Committee.
Following his retirement, Rev. Miles served as interim pastor for Long Branch Baptist Church and Fairview Baptist Church, and served as supply pastor for High Point Baptist, Bay Springs Baptist, Brown Springs Baptist, Clanton Plains Baptist, Hopewell Baptist, Macedonia Baptist, and Pine Grove Baptist Churches.
Rev. Miles served many years as a bi-vocational minister and farmer. He enjoyed farming and gardening. He would plant, grow, nurture, and share his crops with his friends and neighbors. He was also very active in the community having been elected to two four-year terms as County Commissioner between the years of 1958 and1966. He served for many years on the State Committee Board of Farm Bureau and was a County Board Member as well. Rev. Miles was a member of Woodmen of the World # 516 and served as their Chaplain for many years.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Wade was also preceded in death by his 3 brothers, Elmore, Croft, and Grady Miles; 7 sisters, Arie Carpenter, Ida Mae Mills, Estelle Mills, Lillian Mills, Mattie Benfield, Gladys Maynard, and Elaine Miles; and his great granddaughter, Anna Grace Sellers.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth “Lib” Miles of the home; 3 daughters, Doris Ann (Nicky) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC, Pam (William) Stancil of Ruby, SC, and Debi (David) Wallace of Blythewood, SC; 7 grandchildren, Steven (Angie) Sellers, Bryan (Melinda) Sellers, Jennifer Sellers, Chris (Ashley) Stancil, Andrew Stancil, Katherine Wallace, and Ian Wallace; 6 great grandchildren, Austin, Josh, Haley, August, Brittany, and John Michael; 2 brothers, George Washington Miles of Colorado Springs, CO, Jerry Brooks Miles of Lancaster, SC; 2 sisters-in-law, Phyllis Miles of Washington, and Rachel Miles (Avery) Jackson of Mt. Croghan, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family cordially requests memorials be made to the Cross Roads Baptist Church Benevolence Committee, P.O. Box 72 Ruby, SC 29741 or to a charity of one’s choice.
One of Rev. Miles’ treasured statements was “I may not be much of a preacher, but I strive to be a really good pastor”
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
~ II Thess. 4:13-18
