DECEASED: Mrs. Susan Gaskins Hodge, age 61, died Saturday, August 2, 2008 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Shiloh United Methodist Church
INTERMENT: will follow in the church cemetery
VISITATION: 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Monday, August 4, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home
HISTORY: Mrs. Hodge was born June 17, 1947 in Summerville, SC a daughter of Evelyn Gladys Patrick Gaskins and the late William Preston "Douglas" Gaskins. Susan was the widow of the late James Harold Hodge. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, and an adoring grandmother as well as a beloved sister and dear friend to many. Mrs. Hodge was a teacher for 37 years in the Chesterfield County School District where she was actively employed. While Language Arts was her specialty, she taught life skills such as respect, dignity, and perseverance to hundreds of students whose lives she touched. During her years of service, she received many honors and special recognitions, including "Teacher of the Year". Mrs. Hodge was a faithful member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was very involved in the community. She was a kind and generous person who freely gave of her time and talents to help others. Susan was also preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine Oliver, and also 3 special nephews.

Her Precious Granddaughters: Catherine Elizabeth Cross, Caroline Susan Cross, Anna Elisabeth Hodge, all of Florence, SC and soon to be expected, Camryn Olivia Horton
Mother: Gladys Patrick Gaskins of Hartsville, SC

During the years she dealt with breast cancer and the treatments, she not only survived, she thrived and as such served as an inspiration to many people with serious illnesses. Having the experience to guide others at such a hard time and to live as an example was in her words "one of the blessings" of living with cancer.
