William D. "Pete" Thurman

Chesterfield, SC

 Mr. William D. “Pete” Thurman, age 86, entered into rest on Monday, December 2, 2024. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Ruby Baptist Church by Pastor Ronald Thurman with burial to follow in the Ruby Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Thursday, prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of his son Allan, 913 W. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC.

 Born on April 9, 1938, in Ruby, SC, Mr. Thurman was the son of the late Tom and Cora Gulledge Thurman. He graduated from Ruby High School in 1956 and later earned his business degree from Chesterfield – Marlboro Technical College. His working career included serving as the Associate Director with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, alongside previous roles as a loan officer with the Production Credit Association and a deputy sheriff with Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department. He also owned and operated T&T Grocery in Ruby, SC.

A faithful member of Ruby Baptist Church, Mr. Thurman served as former treasurer, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school superintendent. He was well-known for his love of sports, particularly softball, which he played well into his 50s. An avid coffee drinker, he regularly frequented Moore’s Drive-In, where he enjoyed socializing with friends.

 In addition to his parents, Mr. Thurman was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Sandra Jenkins Thurman; and all of his siblings, Susie Raffaldt, Helen Clark, Buddy Thurman, Bobby Thurman, and Charles Thurman; and daughter-in-law, Angie Thurman.

 Survivors include his 3 sons, William Kelly (Kim) Thurman of Lumberton, NC, George Allan (Terry) Thurman, and John Kevin Thurman both of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Holly (Mark) Pankey, Alyssa (Austin) Britt, Mary-Kaitlin Thurman, Will Thurman, Leah (Clayton) Hurst, Lauren (James) Griggs, Ryan (Margie) Johnson, and Anna (JL) Schaff; 9 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Chizuko Jenkins, and Doris Thurman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
